Are Saudi Women next? Mai Yamani asks in an article published last month in Project Syndicate. http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/yamani27/English
Hopefully yes. We have seen the youth of Tunisia asking for the right to live in dignity, women in Cairo protesting for a better future, men in Tripoli fighting for democracy. And so, many now hope to see women in Saudi fight and achieve equality.
However, it has been more than a month since the call for a “driving day” for women in the Kingdom of Saud, and nothing has happened. Manal Al Sharif, one of the first women to defy the ban on women driving this year has been put in jail soon after and defamed. Since then, not much has happened in Saudi Arabia and the misogynistic bases of the society have still not been powerfully shaken. Too many obstacles, not enough support.
So, are Saudi Women next? They might be, but not anytime soon.
